Inspiration PLUS Strategy
When designing a hermit crab habitat, take time to find inspiration! Make the habitat fun, give it a theme. But be strategic! The 8 essentials of hermit crab life MUST be included in your habitat.
These photos were the inspiration for our newest Ikea Milsbo Hermit Crab Habitat Hack.
TALL GREY MOUNTAINS!
TALL CLIMBING BRANCHES!
GREEN FOREST-Y FUN!
We used these tall grey mountains as the foundation for the 5+ levels, plus added plenty of vertical climbing branches and opportunities for exploring and hiding.
The taller the enclosure, the more space available to create levels and climbing opportunities. Hermit crabs LOVE climbing and exploring. In the wild, they climb trees and explore large rock formations. They love digging around root systems of big trees and exploring dense mangroves by the water.
These two photos served as our inspiration for our newest large Hermit Crab Habitat: the Ikea Milsbo Hermit Crab Habitat Hack!
Adding level on top of bottom level
When adding another level above the bottom level, make sure it’s connected in a way that your hermit crab pets will be able to safely and securely climb. Use a climbing branch, rope ladder etc. that is securely connected and won’t shift or fall.
We use Great Stuff Pond and Stone, an expandable foam spray product used for Koi pond waterfalls and stone work outdoors. It’s non-toxic to fish and plants when dry, and is waterproof. It can connect wood branches and fake rock and levels all together, and to the sides of your glass enclosure. (see upcoming posts in this Ikea Milsbo Hermit Crab Habitat Hack for photos and more on how to use this product).
